SENATOR SMITH: In the first one?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes; I think so.
SENATOR SMITH: And 23 in the second boat before you got in?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Including the stowaway there would be 23. I made the twenty-fourth.
SENATOR SMITH: Twenty women?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Twenty women, yes; the quartermaster, one seaman, the stowaway, and then when I got in there were 24.
SENATOR SMITH: Any children?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: No; I do not think we had any children. Later on we tied up to another boat, toward morning, for a very short time — I think for about 15 minutes.
SENATOR SMITH: What boat was that?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I do not know. Our quartermaster did not know the number of our boat. I do not know the other. I know they called out and asked the number of our boat and our quartermaster did not know which it was.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you hear the testimony given this morning by the third officer?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I heard part of it, sir. I was out in the hail while he was giving some of it.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you hear him say that a lifeboat was attached to his lifeboat for a while?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes; but, then, let me see; did he not say he took some people off of that boat?
SENATOR SMITH: I was going to come to that.
MAJ. PEUCHEN: No; that was not our boat.
SENATOR SMITH: He said he took three people out of his lifeboat.
MAJ. PEUCHEN: And put them into the one attached.
SENATOR FLETCHER: On the starboard side of No. 7.
SENATOR SMITH: That was not done in your boat?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: No. The only thing that occurred with the boat we were tied up with was, we asked how many men they had in their boat, and this quartermaster said he had about seven sailors, or something like that — six or seven. Then we said, "Surely you can spare us one man, if you have so many," and we got a fireman.
SENATOR SMITH: You got a fireman?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: One more man out of that boat.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Dans le premier?

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Des enfants?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Non; je ne pense pas que nous ayons eu d’enfants. Plus tard, nous nous sommes amarrés à un autre bateau, vers le matin, pendant très peu de temps — 15 minutes, je crois. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : De quel canot s’agissait-il?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Je ne sais pas. Notre quartier-maître ne connaissait pas le numéro de notre canot. Je ne connais pas l’autre. Je sais qu’ils ont demandé le numéro de notre bateau et que notre quartier-maître ne savait pas lequel.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous entendu le témoignage donné ce matin par le troisième officier?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : J’en ai entendu une partie, monsieur. J’étais dans le hall pendant qu’il le donnait.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que vous l’avez entendu dire qu’une embarcation de sauvetage était attachée à son embarcation de sauvetage pendant un certain temps?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Oui, mais laissez-moi voir; n’a-t-il pas dit qu’il avait fait descendre des gens de ce canot?
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : J’allais y venir.
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Non, ce n’était pas notre canot.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Il a dit qu’il avait sorti trois personnes de son canot de sauvetage.
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Et qu’il les avait placées dans celui-ci.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : À tribord du no 7.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Cela n’a pas été fait à bord de votre canot?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Non. La seule chose qui s’est produite avec le canot avec lequel nous étions amarrés, c’est que nous avons demandé combien d’hommes ils avaient dans leur canot, et ce quartier-maître a dit qu’il avait environ sept marins, ou quelque chose comme ça — six ou sept. Ensuite, nous avons dit : «Vous pouvez certainement nous donner un homme, si vous en avez tant», et nous avons eu un chauffeur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous avez eu un chauffeur?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Un homme de plus dans ce canot.
